Proofreading

Overview

Proofreading is a lighter form of copy-editing. It is appropriate when:

  • Your document has been copy-edited and produced in a publishable form. Now you need a last scan through it to see if any errors have been introduced (or even missed).
  • Your document exists only in a PDF format – Acrobat Reader has some commenting tools but it is not possible to make structural changes, or even to ‘accept’ changes in order to get a clean copy from the marked-up copy, as can be done in MS-Word.
  • Your document is for limited distribution, for instance a parish, club or school magazine or newsletter.

What does Proofreading involve?

Proofreading involves:

  • Checking grammar and spelling
  • Checking readability and content
  • Raising additional points that might improve the text.
